A new Heritage Toronto plaque was the starting point of the recent medical history walking tour for a group of medical student members of the University of Toronto “Health History Interest Group” that was hosted by the TMHC.

The plaque was installed on October 14th at the 150 College Street entrance of the recently re-vitalized FitzGerald Building and honours the rich historical legacy of the School of Hygiene, for which the building was originally designed and which the School occupied from 1927 to 1975. Until 1955, this Building was also home to Connaught Laboratories, with which the School shared administrations.
TMHC member, Christopher Rutty, was closely involved in the curation of this plaque, working on the project with Chris Bateman and Meg Sutton of Heritage Toronto during the fall of 2024. He helped draft and refine the text, ensuring historical focus and accuracy within a limited space, and also sourced archival images.
A plaque honouring the School of Hygiene’s story was proposed by the University of Toronto as part of the FitzGerald Building’s restoration/re-vitalization. Today the FitzGerald Building is home to much of U of T’s administration.
