Congratulations to our member Steven McCabe and his co-author Anthony Smith on the publication of their book Sterling Bunnell: From Son of the Gold Rush to Founding Father of Hand Surgery. The book was launched in October 2025 at the annual meeting of the American Society for Surgery of the Hand (ASSH).
Hand surgeons McCabe and Smith trace the story of Dr Bunnell who is known as the founder of hand surgery in the United States as well as the founder of the ASSH. Bunnell created the specialty of hand surgery out of his experience serving in the US military treating wounded soldiers in World War I. Through a careful study of Bunnell’s notebooks and other artifacts, the authors detail Bunnell’s fascinating life as a veteran, ornithologist, pilot, surgeon, husband and father.
